From the 6th April 2007 when a tenant pays a deposit the landlord or agent must protect it using a government authorised tenancy deposit scheme. Within 14 days of signing a new tenancy agreement details about how the deposit is protected must be supplied to the incoming tenants

The government wants to make sure your tenancy deposit is protected so that any disputes between you and the landlord or agent will be easier to resolve and you gat back all or part of your deposit when you are entitled to it.
